Research indicates a loss of ankle mobility with chronic ankle sufferers – primarily in ankle dorsiflexion – which is the motion you need to walk correctly. Reserach also indicates a change in muscle control patterns not only in the ankle but also up the kinetic chain, such as a loss of hip control. Therefore: 1. Improve ankle dorsiflexion: calf stretching, seeing a Physical Therapist to mobilize your ankle and decrease swelling. 2. Why do I get pain on the inside of my foot when I increase my training?

Brian Yee PT, MPhty, OCS, FAAOMPT Pain that occurs on the inside of the foot when increasing your training is usually due abnormal forces placed upon it. This can occur with the foot either pronating too much (going flat) or the foot loading to the ball of it excessively. Either way, increased stress is placed along the arch and pain can occur there. Training then should be modified not to allow the arch to collapse or load to the front of the foot excessively. Why can sitting lead to back pain?

Brian Yee PT, MPhty, OCS, FAAOMPT Sitting, especially for a long time, can put undue stress on the low back structures. There is a clinical term called ‘creep phenomenon’ that describes how prolonged sitting can hurt the back. ‘Creep’ is like holding the ends of a piece of hard taffy and then watching it slowly stretch out over time. Similarly, with prolonged sitting the structures of the lower back can slowly deform and tissue breakdown occurs. This breakdown can include the muscles, fascia, ligaments, joints, and intervertebral disc in the back. What conditions can lead to a ‘groin’ pull?

Groin pulls comprise mostly of the adductor muscles of the inner thigh. These injuries usually occur with sports that requie cutting, pivoting and side to side movement  such as soccer, lacrosse, and football. It can also occur in runners and cyclists when the hip is required to be used in situations like uphill terrain. Strength deficits with these injuries are not necessarily in the adductor muscles, but instead from the posterior hip muscles – gluteus maximus and medius. In Physical Therapy, we can use mechanical traction or hands-on techniques to reduce the nerve compression. With these techniques we look for a reduction of pain and intensity. Typically, the further the symptoms go down the arm or leg, the worse the nerve symptoms are.
